It was on New Year’s day 2020 that we took the decision. It had been a difficult year, and we had been seeking a fresh start for our family. Many of our close friends congregated regularly in this part of Burgundy, around two hours’ drive from Paris, and centred on the beautiful ‘eternal hill’ of Vézelay, the magnificient UNESCO world heritage site and medieval pilgrimage centre.
Hours of research on the intranet, and late evening conversations (and glasses of wine) with friends, led us to an unexpected destination: Corvol ‘the proud’, and a discrete old house with an unusual tower tucked away at the very edge of the village. One frosty, sunny winter afternoon, we arrived at destination, and knew immediately that this unusual building had been waiting for us.
